A friend on the hiring board told me they try to put the guys with ATP mins in the Saab and the low timers in the jets. The key word is "try". Not every Saab FO has the ATP mins, and not every jet FO doesn't. I seriously doubt that they would actually hold you back just to give you a Saab spot. You never can be sure with things like this though.
On a side note, I believe there were a few Saab FO spots in the next class anyways, so you wouldn't even need to be held back to get one, but I haven't been paying close attention to it.
MEM is more laid back, with essentially 3 banks giving you 1-2 hours airport appreciation time in between banks. In comparison, DTW just keeps you going nonstop all day long. Your longest break might be 35 or 40 minutes on any given day. Needless to say, there are exceptions to these generalities.
If you like to get out of the plane, and sit down for a meal, you might not get too many opportunities to do so in DTW. Many many meals there are scarfed down during pushback/waiting for numbers. On the other hand, you are more likely to get higher credit/more days off in DTW, as there is no shortage of 7:58 credit days there.
You will eventually have the choice between DTW and MEM, but maybe not right out of training.
i'm in the nov 26th 900 class and the fo's in my class got awarded MEM and what ever CA wanted MEM got it in this last bid. you should be able to hold MEM if you want it.

For all of you out there dying to get to MSP remember that is the most senior base, but strangest of all we have the worst schedules, the worst credit lines, and the worst airports to fly into. Unless it would cause you to have a two leg commute or to actually commute in the first place, you may find a better career of flying in DTW. As a side note, unless the seat locks come off of the 150+ captains that recently upgraded, the Saab in all likelyhood might not be the aircraft that you upgrade into. However if you do upgrade in the 900 be prepared for to watch you bidding number get worse every month as more senior people to you take it as well. If the seat locks come off 11 days off is all you are going to see for the next two years.
I don't know if you are talking about CRJ9 or Saab because right now DTW has worse CRJ9 schedules than MSP. MSP CRJ9 schedule has been improving somewhat and is better than DTW schedule as now.
I think Sigep_nm was referring to the new hire CR9 Captains, not FO's. Jet CA's have historically been a 7-10 year upgrade at XJ (with the exception of when the AVRO's first arrived and we were all in the same situation), so the fact that its now down to less than a year for the 900 seems like an anomaly right now. So, assuming the upgrade time in the 900 gets closer to "normal" those ultra junior guys will continue to be the most junior 900 CA as pilots who are overall more senior to you take the 900 upgrade. In this scenario, you would be on straight reserve for the foreseeable future (straight reserve schedules are 11 days off at XJ).
JR shot down the decreased seat lock request from ALPA almost immediately. So I wouldn't be holding your breath for that to change anytime soon... which is good news to you new hires hoping to get a quick jet upgrade. That being said, we're not too far from the 900 upgrades hitting the bottem of the list. At that point, seat locks are released on an as needed basis in order of seniority.
Sigep_nm was comparing MSP to DTW, not MEM to DTW. You will eventually have the choice between DTW and MEM, but maybe not right out of training. Between MEM and DTW, pick which ever base has the easiest commute. If that isn't a factor, IMHO Dtw has the best flying at XJ and MEM is historically the most junior base (which would give you better relative seniority). It all depends on what your priorities are.

I was hired during the era of the "you need us more than we need you" attitudes from mgmt so my gut reaction is not to call and just smile and say thank you to whatever equipment you're assigned. But the tables have turned since then and maybe it is acceptable to make requests. Some of the newer guys on here might be able to give you a better answer.

While Im not sure that making a request would be considered disrespect and lead to them reconsidering your employment, I will say this. There has been enough of a run around for alot of us on the jet just getting through training with all the delays. And the lack of info from the company on the situation...just unbelievable. That said, you might exacerbate an already thin stretched training/scheduling department by making a request for something other than what they had originally planned for you.

I agree with Tinpusher. You all need to relax and let it happen. Just because you are a high time pilot does not mean you will get the Saab. Everyone in my class with the exception of one had well over 1200 hours and two of us had over 4000 hours and we were all assigned CRJ9.
Saab is a great airplane and you should thank your lucky star if you get the Saab because chances are you will get the upgrade right off the bat or during your ground school if you have the ATP. Right now Saab drivers have the best schedule and you have the chance to make a lot more money than CRJ drivers.
