I was under the impression that your wife's parents were allowed to use the travel benefits. Is this not correct?

That's correct, even step parents if that's the case. Not brother, sister, aunt, uncle, etc though... Hopefully that cleared it up. You do have "buddy" passes for those instances, I believe you're limited to 8 a year and you must travel with the individual in order to use them.

I heard that the buddy passes could be used as long as the person was coming to visit you, or meet you somewhere. Like if you were gonna go to Miami with a buddy and he llives in CO and you in MSP. As long as your final destination was the same, he could use your buddy passes. Does anybody know anything about this?

Nope not at Mesaba. Some yahoo at NWA was selling their buddy passes on ebay and screwed it up for the rest of us. At Mesaba the buddy must travel with employee on the plane.

From the Mesaba website:

Parents

The term Parents shall include mother/father/step-father/step-mother of the employee. In-laws are not eligible. Only the parents of the active employee are eligible to travel on passes and reduced rates. In the case of adoptions the adoption must have taken place prior to the employee reaching 18 years of age.

Yeah it does kind of suck but it kind of makes sense in a way. Last year i got a buddy pass on U.S. Airways and i watched on two different occasions where the buddy was told that they may not have a seat and they went crazy on the gate agent. "my cousin said i got a seat in first class" and on and on. It was embarrassing. The worst thing was is this guy ended up getting a seat and i watched the plane leave.

I can only imagine that our travel benefits will improve. I just wonder when. I hear they are leaps and bounds better than they used to be. The one thing i will miss is being able to choose your seat on an empty flight and getting issued a boarding pass at the kiosk.

Parents: Travel at reduced rate
Spouse, Children: Free travel
Step-parents: Also qualify as parents. (i.e. both step parents AND biological parents can get the reduced travel benefits)

Buddy passes: The person MUST travel with the employee on ANY leg. 16 one way passes per year.

Designated travel companion: 16 one way passes in addition to the buddy passes. Can travel without employee. Travel companion can be designated ONLY if a domestic partner has not been designated (according to the website). I can double check.
