Had a federali on board last week and engaged in some discussion about the new crew duty and rest rules possibly going into affect...when asked how long it would take he said:

Usually it takes 2 years to get a rule brought to legislation but their goal is to have new rules in place within three months ...he said something will be on the table by early OCT

The main parts of the rule suggest:

reducing duty days to 12 hours...possibly discountinuing CDO's...and having shorter days for thos that fly a large quantity of shorter legs in a duty period...

i'm hopeful we won't have to furlough the required number...and can get everyone back here...and those guys in the pool

On another note he was actually there to check my pairing and make sure that Mesaba was giving everyone legal rest...

Does that mean days off will be reduced? It sounds like these rules will further erode quality of life. They should pass a law requiring crew scheduling to build lines/pairings that are more efficient.

I would guess that you could expect a reduction in days off. Personally, I think a line where you are away from home 20 days is more fatiguing than a 15 day off line with a few 15 hour days.

I think rather than duty time, I'd like to see something preventing changes in duty periods. In other words, if you're duty period has been noon to midnight for four days followed by 1 day off then all the sudden you're expected to be ready for a 4am show! Screws up you’re sleep schedule just as bad as crossing 5 time zones!

If anyone thinks that the proposed regs will be good for us they are diluted. What we will end up with is low credit lines. Low number of days off. Longer hotel visits. When contracts come around there will be no need for 75 hour guarantee from the company perspective. I think we need to fight this. Yes, what we have now is not "ideal", but if you think the government is going to "fix" ANYTHING (health care included) you need help!!!!

According to you it look’s like more than half of this forum is diluted. Day’s off will most likely stay the same considering that the maximum flight time is still staying at eight hours. I would like to see this change to 10 but that will be unlikely. With duty time being decreased, this will require the company to better use there manpower if they want to keep payroll low. Example: with a 12 hour duty day do you think there going to want you to have long sits in between flights, or have you flying? With 16, they had a big margin between 8 and 16….

For commuters, these new rules will better help organize what time they start and end there trips. I have a feeling the days of early shows, followed by late starts followed by a short overnight and back to an early show are over with.

Either way, these new regulations will most definitely require more manpower. Mesaba’s furloughs will not be on the street for long.

I wish you guy’s/gal’s the best of luck at Mesaba. You have a good group over there…

I very much agree with strike time. We all know that the current rest regulations do not address reality. We've already seen how 4 hour min day has promoted better efficiency at Mesaba. My hope is better rest requirements for crews flying more than four legs a day. 7 to 8 legs a day are brutal!

I am just saying be careful what you wish for!!! I really think this is a bad thing not a good one. I think that commuters (Which I am one) will be hung out to dry. I think that you will, yes, have a more productive day while on duty, but you will not get more time in domicile. Your going to see more time away from base not on duty.
I for one, would much rather have 14 hours of duty and days at home, than 12 hours of duty and 12 in the hotel. I don't see how this is going to increase the need for more pilots.
I do wish the guys on the street the best of luck, however, I still say the guys having faith in the system are still diluted.

I would agree that commuters might get bit because the new duty requirements make break up trips more if the airlines want to keep the departure schedules intact. However, that is a small price to pay for the increase in staffing that will result in people getting there jobs back, and increased job security.
