Never mind those signing bonuses, paid housing, no $50k entrance fee (for licenses), and the promise of free or greatly reduced college tuition. Of course, being an Officer in the military has it's own costs, risks, and problems, but to simply say "Jr officers and enlisted men don't make $36k" isn't a fair comparison, because there ARE significant financial bonuses that aren't included in that $36k number.

I know a rumor is a rumor but what are the latest rumors on the number of furloughs that are actually floating around? I'm not asking what people are guessing or what people think the number will be, but I am asking what is the number floating around on the line. I only ask this question because I am so close to the bottom and from past experiences the number I hear from actual line pilots that have been to meetings with the president and such are normally more close to the value actually about to be laid off. I know this question will only have a few responders considering most on this board are furloughed but I am trying to make plans. Thanks in advance.
P.S. And once again, I am looking for actual numbers you have heard, not the numbers you are guessing!

I heard 120. One thing to keep in mind is that DS approached the union with the talk about a co-domicile using LGA. This would really suck and I would hope the union is against it. My thoughts here are the company leaking rumors of furloughs in an attempt to use that as a bargaining chip with the union to use the co-domicile.

Being furloughed would be a nice break for awhile from JFK so I say furlough away.

But... a co-domicile might get some of the geriatric pilots to retire.

Please excuse my ignorance, but does the union has to approve opening a new base or an LGA co-base before the company can act on it?
With the reduction in flying out of CVG what I see the company doing is moving the 70/90 to JFK and eventually closing CVG as a base, or make it a virtual base.
I don’t think Comair has the numbers beyond September, so I do not think they will be making a decision of furloughs till at least the end of this month.

Based on JAN 1 2009 pay rates, an E1 (17 year old kid out of high school without any follow on education) makes $16800 in basic pay. His Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) and Basic Allowance for Subsistence (BAS) are $453.00 and $324.00 respectively. That's $9324.00 per year tax free. If he's an aircrewman, he will receive an additional $1800.00 per year. So, that's $27,924 per year, with 1/3 of that amount being tax free (and that's only FIRST YEAR PAY)! That's definitely more than 1st year starting regional FO pay and you too can earn this right out of high school.

An O1 will earn $31,860 in basic pay. His BAH and BAS will be $615.00 and $223.00 respectively. That's $10,056.00 per year tax free. His flight pay will be an additional $1500.00 per year. That's a total of $43,416 per year (again, FIRST YEAR PAY), with almost a quarter of that amount being tax free.

It's pretty much a guarantee that you won't spend much, if any time away from home during the first few years if you're an aviator or aircrewman. It's full time flight school for $43K per year. Second year pay and subsequent just keeps going higher and higher. Any career changers out there?
