I had a similar experience when my grandfather passed. I was in ATL and called the CP to let them know what happened. They wanted me to at least fly back to a base before they let me go. I told them I wasn't asking permission to go home, I was giving them a courtesy call to inform them I was leaving ATL and going home to be with my family. They got the point and DHed someone in to finish up my trip.

He basically didn't think that a grandparent was a close enough family member for an employee to be affected by their passing to the point where it affects there job. He's a real class act!
