How could I forget. I remember hearing of my Grandmother's passing while I had a 45 minute turn in CVG. I called the chief so I could be relieved from my duties and contact family. His response was "Well, Turbo, I tell you what, we are short staffed right now and I don't have anyone to cover you (there were 3 ready reserves available), so how about you do the BWI out and bank and I will cover your PIT out and back after that. I responded with "Umm. I'll be at home. You have my number."

No kidding. $15k/yr. raise after taxes in exchange for becoming scheduling's *****, having to commute to that ****hole JFK, spending $5k of that $15k on overnight accomodations that are at least comparable to what I had when I was in college, no more weekends or holidays off, atrocious reserve rules?

No thanks. There are better ways to make an extra $10k/yr.

Were you my Captain? He even had the nerve to tell me that I might be getting a letter from the company if I didn't do the out and back. I said "dude, I just told you that I am not in a safe mindset to fly an airplane." He basically didn't think that a grandparent was a close enough family member for an employee to be affected by their passing to the point where it affects there job. He's a real class act!

I had a similar experience when my grandfather passed. I was in ATL and called the CP to let them know what happened. They wanted me to at least fly back to a base before they let me go. I told them I wasn't asking permission to go home, I was giving them a courtesy call to inform them I was leaving ATL and going home to be with my family. They got the point and DHed someone in to finish up my trip.

I remember when you posted that on here a while back. That Captain who told you that should have his head and priorities examined.
