I think you are correct. The project was to be a larger Learjet and Lear got very upset with the design and design changes. Canadair had bulked up the airplane with a bigger fuselage and Lear was so contemptuous of the design, he referred to it as "Fat Albert" Lear left and his next project which never went into production was the LearFan. He could never get the twin-engine gear box to work.
Now renamed the Challenger, Bombardier offered a stretched version after a number of companies including IBM asked about a corporate shuttle. That then became the RJs.
I do not remember and can not find anything about the Challenger being offered to FEDEX as a freighter.
