There are many here that pick up open time for straight pay. Overtime means you get paid some sort of premium for working the exrta hours. Not at colgan they expect you work on your day off for straight pay. But good luck explaining that the scheduling supervisor who has less than a high school education.
Do you guys have Advertised capability at Colgan? I think its one aspect that really comes in handy. Basically you can Advertise your whole trip or just part of it for other guys to pick up.
Speaking of, I am ADV a 2 day 12:00hr trip that gets done at 1pm on Wednesday, any EWR F/O's want it? (trip starts 11/13)
I am getting married this weekend so I need to get my Tux squared away
wow disregard, within 10 minutes of it being ADV, its already gone AWESOMENESS

That's assuming you have that option. Remember, there was a segment of our pilot group that didn't have that contractual option for well over a year. And the MEC was completely comfortable with letting the company violate the CBA on it.

And imagine if that happened on the west coast. I seriously doubt we would have have the issue that spurned the flight ops audits had we had that capability.
Im just curious how this has anything to do w/ free speech?
The OP is making a suggestion, I dont see why that is a problem. Someone brought up a precedent of United, what happened there?
Gotta love new kids..... geeeesh.

Depends on the circumstances as to wether or not that's a valid rationale. Especially if you're comparing line bidding to PBS.
PBS is arguably more efficient, causes less open time, and results in less bodies to staff the operation.
The inefficiencies of line bidding create more open time, and the requirement for more bodies.
What does any of that have to do with what we call "open time" being the equivelant of "overtime" in other jobs? His question was what was Open Time. The easiest explanation was that it is overtime.... and as other have pointed out, it is more cost efficient to keep the airline around 5% understaffed and cover the open flying with overtime(open time). The 20-50% Open Time override still costs less than providing 5% more employees with health, dental, vision, life, disability insurance... sick time and vacation time, and the additonal costs of training.

Sick time and vacation time..... now that is rich!
Just remember, a sick leave policy that includes suspension and termination is not punitive.
