250 to the marker is pretty hard/violent to slow to app speed. Would never be a stablized approach. I have never heard anyone give that clearance at those airports.

Its 250 unless otherwise directed by ATC until joining up on the LOC and configuring flaps gear exc as appropriate to manage speed reduction to be fully configured and stable at 1000ft AGL as per company procedure. This is especially true AT ORD where they do not want you slowing way out and clogging up the pipes. If ORD TRACON wants you to slow down they will assign you a speed. Other wise keep your speed up to help um out. The CRJ is tough to slowdown and go down and requires you to think 10 steps ahead of the aircraft at all times. In the high pace environments Like ORD,JFK exc you have to be on top of your game. Its a tough environment but can also be a lot of fun. Slowing too far out can land you a phone call.

That is definitely NOT enforced in the US.

Actually Air Midwest had some in JFK for a while because the Trash-8's they bought for the DCI contract had some major issues (like faulty wiring, CVRs from 3rd world countries that had to be replaced, etc).

Apparently some guys are doing that, and not telling ATC.

Freedom had the JFK Dash-8s.

Sure, I can see that. I also thought it might be some new company "save money" edict. Obviously, not newbie pilots, since they wouldn't have any (no recent hiring, furloughs).

My suggestion matches what has been said. Give ATC a heads up before doing unusual slowing. The comment about ATC not following their own speed limitations is spot on, unfortunately. By the way, the ATC minimum assigned speed on departure is 230kts, per 7110.65.

Yes, I was at SkW until August 2008. Our "profile" was industry standard, 30 miles at 10,000/250kt. I still program the FMS that way.
