I wanted AW for my Cessna, and America West had them all reserved. So, when they didn't take delivery of N177AW (B737), I paid the FAA $10 to reserve it for my Cardinal model 177... for Anthony Williams.

Hopefully I don't have to explain why they chose AW, or their radio call sign "Cactus" based in PHX. But, I had to look up why the IATA code HP:

"When a small startup dereg airline in Phoenix went looking to get off the ground, it found that another startup airline had gotten its operating certificate issued, and then promptly run out of cash. That airline was Hawaiian Pacific. So the new airline's investors bought Hawaiian Pacific's operating certificate, and with it, the IATA letters HP."

Don't know what the stock ticker symbol was. The FAA/ATC three letter was (and still is with USAir) AWE.

Default SkyWest Airlines:IATA-OO, FAA-SKW, Stock-Skyw

Skywest got OO from the old Sun Aire in PSP, that they bought. The planes have SW or SK on the N-number, or whatever the n-number was from the airline they bought it from. Lots of YV, BR, Comair (which doesn't fill my brain at the moment).

Chautauqua's older planes mostly end with SK. RP is the newer birds. Don't know where the SK came from.
