Default Dear Piedmont: DIAF

So as a recently furloughed F/O it's been a long month waiting for the last paycheck. It looks like Piedmont subtracted the vacation we used that hadn't been accrued yet out of the last paycheck (for me that means 8.3 hours/260 bucks). Since our vacation system is based off of mandatory bids/awards (and using the vacation within the awarded slot), and that technically under furlough we're still accruing seniority (and thus accruing vacation) how the hell can they do this? I've torn through the contract a number of times and can't figure out how this is justified.

I'd have thrown this in the PDT News and Rumors thread, but I was curious about whether other airlines have done this to their furloughees or not. It's incredibly petty and is the financial equivalent of being kicked while being down. Is this a common practice?

As a soon to be furloughed comair FO on Jan 1st. What I'm hearing from our guys just furloughed Nov 1st is we can still get payed for the vacation we accrued for next year. Our bidding for vacation was last month. We were not eligible to bid. I think we call the chief pilots office and then talk to payroll and they will cut you a check.

Doesn't make sense they won't pay you for it. You obviously accrued vacation just like everyone else. Not sure how your contract is written. Good Luck!

Just to clarify, they actually subtracted 260 dollars off of our last months paycheck in order "to pay them back" for the vacation days we used that we hadn't accrued yet (meaning if we accrue 5 vaca days per year and got furloughed halfway through the year we only technically earned 2.5 days and thus owe them for the 2.5 extra that we used).

my (expletive) company "forgot" to send my hours to payroll after my furlough. took weeks to get paid. not only did they do that they also informed the unemployment office that i had only been employed for 1 fiscal quarter therefore unemployment was denied. it took 5 weeks to sort out that mess. come to find out there is at least 3 other cases in which i know of that the company told the unemployment folks that said employee had only been employed for again only 1 quarter. it gets better... when i applied for cobra the insurance company denied the request saying they had been informed by my employer that i quit as opposed to being furloughed... that mess also took around 2 weeks to sort out.

I would say this is not normal. Every company I've ever worked for your vacation is earned based on the time you worked the previous calendar year, so you never go into 'vacation debt'.

So when I was furloughed from XJT in 2008 I was paid any remaining vacation time I had earned in 2007 and not yet used.

I would agree. Must be some fine print in the contract. I would say consult the union unfortunetly. Hopefully your union is more useful than ours at Comair! How long have you been at Piedmont might be the wildcard. Less than a year you will probably get hosed. I will hit 3 years dec 4th. Can't wait to make 3rd year pay for 3 weeks.

What doesn't make sense to me is if you are recalled that same year, are you paid back that money or are you given more vacation. The contract doesn't address a lot of things. I guess that's when management uses their bean counting imaginations to fill in the blanks.

I forget the actual details... but I saw this coming so I didn't take all of my vacation. They actually paid me out the vacation I earned, but If I would have used all of it I would have owed money.

I tried to warn everyone about it that I knew.

I would email Greg in the furlough committee.

For what it's worth, I'm with my GF and she stopped to check out what I was reading, started reading out loud your first sentence and she broke out laughing I thought she was going to roll on the ground or something. I asked her why she was laughing hard, she said it just seems like this website is about a bunch of pilots talking about their shortcoming like divorced women in Opera. I just thought I'd share.
