Default Anyone know the reg about being sick?

About not being able to act as a crew member while sick.

I don't have the book handy but it should be in part 61.

You have to ground yourself if you are too ill to safely fly. Generally you can unground yourself when you feel better if it's a routine illlness (cold, flu, etc). Significant illness or injury requiring medical care would generally require a trip to the AME to get cleared to fly.

I've now found that one. I'm actually looking for if this applies to the FA.

That might in 121. They are required crew members, but I can't recall if part 61 addresses non-pilot crew members.

But if in doubt, I think the PIC should throw the flag in the event of a sick crewmember (I would). That is certainly with PIC discretion.

Check the back side of your medical certificate.

FA's don't have medical certificates.

Disregard F/As at your own peril. See: Sullenberger. His ladies got them all out safely. He gets all the credit but they did their job too when it counted.

Good flight attendants are worth their weight in gold when it matters.

I've had 2 FA's removed from flights since I thought their illness would impair their ability to safely perform their job or cause a bigger problem. Didn't have to do a carpet dance. As the CA you are responsible for their safety/ability to perform their duties also....
You also have the responsibility of pulling a fatigued crewmember off the airplane.

Good on you. At regionals, the Inflight management tends to be very draconian about sick calls, especially in the middle of a trip (I understand that there are underlying reasons for this). Some FA's probably want to call in, but are afraid to. If the CA pulls the FA offline, that should prevent her from getting management heat.
