Understanding PBS helps but there's a limit as to how much it can help someone junior. When I was new I used to fly with the RSR and one of the guys who worked the PBS helpline all the time. Both would show me their bids and look at my bids and give me suggestions every month. I eventually started getting better lines than people who were somewhat senior to me. I still didn't get good lines though, just better than lines I should have gotten.
Now that we're going into a time where staffing is an issue and block hours are high I don't think there's any way to bid lower credit. After you posted about having 2 years seniority and getting 85 hours I looked at my Required Minimum Line Credit from last month and it was 89 hours. There was no way PBS could have even given me a line with 85 hours and 15 days off.

Without filtering through 500 pages of responses, what's a realistic time frame to hold a line in ORD?

Just curious, how much of that 90 credit is block? That would bring you close to 6.4 credit per day.

Yeah, I was going to say... Half a month of PNs means one does not understand PBS well at all. That's ok, we've all been there. Piedmonster, I would HIGHLY suggest a call to the PBS help line and learn what you did wrong. You don't want to go into the rest of this summer doing whatever it is you're doing.

I concur. Never, ever, no matter how junior I was did I ever have more than one PN. The PBS helpline guys are great and want to help you out. Your sanity may depend on it.

Trying to get too restrictive for your seniority (weekends off, 22+hr commutable trips, etc.) and not properly opening up your bid by layer 7 is the most common way people screw themselves. The key to PBS is understanding how each parameter works in relation to each other both within a layer and as the system moves through each subsequent layer. My advice is to learn as much as you can about the defaults and properties because certain pairing and line properties WILL result in conflicts further restricting your line and causing it to move past layer 7 forcing PNs upon you.
Again a PN means you screwed yourself by not properly opening up your bid by layer 7 and a CN means the company screwed you by assigning a pairing they needed covered and you just happened to be the most JR crewmember it was legal to force the pairing upon.
