It's funny - I remember staying at the Radisson (I was flying corporate back then), and wandered into Lofte's for a drink. ALPA was at Lofte's, and I scored a copy of Flying the Line that night. I told them I wasn't with Skywest, but they didn't seem to care. Still have Volumes 1 and 2 on a shelf in the study.

I don't think so. I would say 85%-90% of SkyWest pilots don't care about what is happening at the airline, or at the very least, throw their hands up and shrug. They read the SAPA forums, complain about how bad life is getting and then go home and hide from everything until the next trip. The vocal few on the forums stomp their feet, get worked up on the forums about bringing back the thumbs up/down feature while in the meantime, everything continues to play out as the company plans. No change any time soon. They've gotten used to life as "it has always been done that way" mode.

Maybe, but non-votes are no longer counted as voting no. Only those who vote are counted.

That would probably be why it would pass this time around.

I think what he's saying is that people would vote no for a union out of complacency. They're indifferent about the company and their position in it and wouldn't be willing to change just because they don't care.

That's sort of how the last pay vote went. It was a pay freeze and on the forums everyone was vocally against it. The vote showed that the actual majority of the company threw up their arms, said "whatever" and passed it though. The unofficial SAPA forum poll was about 75% No yet is passed easily.

While not mentioning SkyWest Airlines it could most definitely have negative repercussions on the airline. There's a correlation.

Hmm, I wonder who I should trust more? The Motley Fool? Or the Bank of America?

Neither. SKYW needs to start making some changes or its going to be left in the dust by some of these other carriers who have adapted to today's airline environment. If they just keep saying "well that's the way we've always done it," then they are going to ride themselves right out of business. You can't keep running the airline the same way you did in the 80's or 90's.

You mean by making money hand over fist? Isn't that what you usually try to do with any business. $140M profit last year doing things the way they always have?

Well, I don't know. The fact that non-voters are not counted, would make a difference. But I would bet that if an actual union vote would ever happen again, management would come out and say that if you do vote one in, they will automatically move to merge the airlines. Which is not true. Even with unions, they still have the power of whipsaw with seperate airlines (see TSA/Compass/Gojet & Envoy/PSA/PDT). They wouldn't just give that away. They would want huge concessions from XJT (see Mesa/Freedom & RAH/CHQ/Shuttle America). And that's only if they'd even consider it.
