The Insanity of Concessions in 2014

Nope no military or connections. In the long run this will benefit all regional pilots. This why I cannot condone any voting in of concessions at the regional level. Even pay freezes of compensation and/or per diem has a huge effect based on inflation 10 years from now. And one cannot morally condone the screwing over of pilots behind them while saying that it does not effect them. This is what many regional pilots say of mainline pilots during the creation of "B scale" regional pilot wages in the 90s.

If on the other hand AE pilots sign a concessionary 10 year deal, it could easily be 15 years before a new deal is signed based on RLA negotiation time tables. That's a long time to suck on the tailpipe of an industry trailing wages and work rules.
Even IF AE pilots ratify a horrible contract, AE still may have a hard time attracting newly minted pilots. After all, 1500 hour pilots have more skin in the game than 250 hour wonders and will expect to get paid above the poverty line. It should be interesting.

Point taken. I think we are in agreement that any concessions are not in the interest of any regional pilot in the long term.

Another issue is the majors are clouding the judgment of regional pilots by offering flows or preferential hirings in exchange for concessions. This is completely ridiculous because like the article mentions, they will need pretty much everyone on the regional ranks to replace their retiring pilots anyways. It's just stunning what's happening.

To 80 & phuz, exactly my point. If you are making 1/4 million and thinking rj pilots are keeping you from making 1/2 million, hope they all loose their jobs. Got mine, F'em.
80, I think most of your input is great.
Rgr, is your avatar Lethal Weapon? Warner Bros. spells it differently.
I'm too old for this S... is very appropriate.

Very well written article. I hope AE says NO as well just like we did at Expressjet. Regionals are going to shrink no matter what contract you take. The number of airframes allowed are in mainline contracts and that number is far less than what is out there right now.
Those worried the sky is falling and they will instantly lose their jobs can calm down, just like everything else in the airline industry it will be a slow downturn, with enough time to see it happening and make the next move, most will move on to another airline, several to other professions, some will hold on to the bitter end.

Sometimes you have to make the tough calls and say no when enough is enough. If not you will bleed to death from a thousand cuts.
