Best Regional Out of Houston
Hey guys, after several years of flight insructing and with an incredible amount of debt which I am planing to pass to my grand children, I'm finally done. I've got my 1500 hours and with them the opportunity to jump from Cessna to Lear or Embraer. However, the amount of marvelous comments about how good life in Regionals is, makes me to formulate this question. What's my best option out of Houston and why? Thanks for your sincere answers. I have to add that I have to live in Houston because I am married, and my wife is working in Taco Cabana as cashier (which means she is the money maker, with stable better paid job, who brings the beacon-tacos home)

The best regional in terms of pay and contract is XJT. But IAH is too senior. You're left with Skywest, Republic and MESA. If you can get IAH as a base with one of them, good luck as most of the jr. bases are in the most expensive part of the country, like NY or DC. Piedmont has a base in Charlotte and Salisbury MD, you'd have to move, but those locations are cheaper; but now you know why regional pilots are so aggravated at this industry.

IAH is a pretty junior base for SkyWest, and their pay and benefits are considerably better than Mesa or Republic.

Republic doesn't have an IAH base plus they have a horrible contract. If you want to live in base, you probably should go to Mesa for the quicker upgrade. Although, Mesa's contract is only slightly better than Republic's.
