Most of the hiring at the majors have been to replace the shrinking regionals. The retirement wave is just getting started and does not account for the mass amount of hiring that has occurred.
Where do you work?

How are the regionals shrinking? How many regional airlines are adding new planes? Sure a lot are getting rid of 50 seater but the overall capacity isnt shrinking by an alarming rate. Saying we will all be at the majors in 5 years is what I was told 5 years ago. I hope I'm wrong about it but I really doubt it

There are more pilots that are exiting the regional sector than there are entering. True there are 50 sweaters getting replaced by 76 seaters but they both take 2 pilots to fly. Capacity might look similar, but those seats take fewer pilots to fly.

I admit I jumped around on the video, but the extreme zoned out disinterested look on the reps face who is sitting next to the woman at 50:28 says it all. These guys are a bunch of paid shills whose hearts aren't into the crap they are spouting. This "summit" is inane and worse than listening to congress-speak.

They claim new nurses are making 40-50,000 range, noooo. Try 60-80,000. Yes, nurse work their buts off. An X-ray tech with a 2 yr degree is 40-50K.

I love how their recruiting strategy is SJS, though!

For those of you that say "regionals won't be around in 5 years". Why did delta just ask for 25 more 76 seat aircraft in the TA? Why did United just add 10 additional 175's? Management doesnt plan to let the regional flying go.

I would like to know where their money comes from, who is funding them?

There will be regionals. But not many. The majors will cannibalize them.

I have a friend that's a nurse. She works three 12 hour days. That's right, she works 12 days a month. And no free "hospital appreciation" hours either.

With the work hours and pay the way they are, for many the pilot career just isnt attractive. As they say "the juice isn't worth the squeeze"

Commair, gone. Colgan, gone. ExpressJet, dying. I'm not sure on this one, but I also think skywest parked some 50 seaters, and republic has parked airplanes they can't staff and has asked for relief. Airlines are cancelling flights for lack of crews. We cover endeavor flying a lot supposedly. Pilot contracts starting to improve due to supply and demand. These things take time to happen. In my opinion, there will be more consolidation, and reduction of aircraft at the regionals then has already happened. Delta 717s are an example of how the regionals are being replaced. Their TA was talking about more small narrow bodied airplanes. United has said they want to do the same.

Pilot contracts improving? Hardly! Wow you get a hotel room once and a while for commuting in to the base we closed? Retention bonus? Too bad its from the money they saved all while paying you well below what you deserve.
Pay rates? Hmmm what's the f/o pay again? Still dismal compared to eveyother country. Oh maybe they are offering 200%? That's nice but I enjoy my days off and prefer not to work or get junior manned on my down time.

Name one regional that has GREATLY improved their contract....I'll wait.
