So ALPA is against the reauthorization because...
Lithium Batteries
The current effort does not address the serious risks presented by the unregulated carriage of lithium batteries.
Admittedly I don't know much about this, but if it's a true risk wouldn't the FAA be all over it? They're all over everything else. Have there been any incidents with lithium batteries?
Secondary Cockpit Doors
It fails to protect access to the cockpit through mandatory physically installed secondary barriers.
Sure, I guess they might be nice, but one reinforced door has worked the last 15 years. Why is ALPA suddenly not okay with that system? The added cost and reduced seat capacity on any given plane makes this seem economically unviable; maybe we should focus our limited leverage on other areas (cough RLA cough).
3rd Class Medicals
Instead, the proposed legislation actually degrades safety by undercutting the existing regulations regarding medical certification for general aviation pilots.
Seriously? 3rd class medical standards? We don't have any bigger fish to fry than that? Scope choke? Regional pay rates? Railway Labor Act? Delta's contract? This doesn't even pertain to airline pilots.
