They already got approval. They just don't do it. We have several etops airplanes flying around conus.

When I saw the first picture, all I could think of was a certain UA DC10 engine failure but the second pic shows the fan section intact. Seems lucky that it didn't take out half the stabilizer when it departed. Still a lot of drag out there. Great job by the crew. Shouldn't have to pay for any adult beverages for a while.

anyone notice the latches on top of the engine are up? maybe the cowl wasn't closed and ripped itself apart in flight?

The front cowling (inlet ring) doesn't open...latched portions are aft of the banjo-forging, visible in the incident picture.

Those latches you mentioned probably popped from the likely huge loads/vibration when the inlet ring came off.

Default Well, it was an engine failure

The engine was not intact - this was an uncontained fan blade failure. See
