I think SWAPA helped price us out of the red-eye market.
We held the line on Avg Daily Guarantee and anything that crosses midnight forces at least one more day of pay (6.5 TFP).
So a two day of red-eye's would pay the three day guarantee.
Pretty sure that's not the way it pays at other airlines.

That's exactly how it pays at Delta. There is a carve out that anything landing between midnight and 0200 doesn't count, but that's not a red eye. Our min day is 5:15. Not sure how that matches up to 6.5 TFP

A reasonable conversion for comparison purposes is 1.15 TFP = 1 hour. So 6.5 trips is approximately 5:39.

As for red-eyes at other carriers there are some additional pay protections and rightly so. If we got two days of 6.5 per red-eye, I'd be very happy with that. There needs to be something extra to account for the damage that it does to your body and the longevity that backside of the clock flying takes off of your life.
Like I mentioned before, I usually didn't mind doing them but also didn't bury my head in the sand about how unhealthy majorly disrupted circadian rythem is.

What is the yield on red eyes v's day flights? Would the marginal revenue pay the marginal cost of rejiging the operation to support large scale 24h operation?
I am not sure it's as clear cut as it would seam to some.
As to the bag fees in my opinion it's as much about marketing as straight income. It could be that the free bags allows the fair to be on average higher than it would with bag fees.
