Cool Newbie Question

Hello,i'm new around here and just have a question that most of you might find dumb. I'm not a pilot although it was a dream of mine and still is since i was very young, however now at 40 yr's old it's a little to late to make career changes.

So here is my question, when the captain say's to the ATC,....

Quantas flight 1211 heavy with x-ray request taxi for take-off departing straight out
or

Quantas flight 1211 with hotel request taxi for departing straight out

What does it mean when the pilot says Heavy with x-ray?..or Hotel?,,Lima?..e.c.t...

Hello Bond.
In response to your question concerning the word HEAVY following a flight number, this is said by crews when the aircraft they are operating can exceed 255,000 lbs Maximum Takeoff Weight. Even if they weigh only 200,000 lbs, they still call their flight a heavy.

Your other question, regarding the word HOTEL, INDIA, JULIET, KILO etc...
Airports typically take a weather observation each hour. This has basic weather information that is valuable to the safe operation of all aircraft. This report will include the wind direction & velocity, ceiling(how high the clouds are above the ground), sky condition (clear, scattered, broken or overcast), visibility and restrictions to same, ie: fog, snow, rain etc..., temperature and dew point temperature, altimeter setting, runway(s) in use for takeoff and landing. The ATIS (Automatic Terminal Information Service) is given a name using the phonetic alphabet so the Air Traffic Controller can tell if the flight has the most current weather information.
The ATIS broadcast (on its' own frequency) relieves the ground controller from giving this information to every flight that calls, thus reducing frequency congestion.
Hope this answered your questions.

Thank you R1830toIAE2500, I have a better understanding now. The plane i was flying in the simulator was a 767-300ER with MTOW of 408.000lbs (or that what it said) so when i programed the FMC, i would set it to the max take off weight, (max feul, passengers, baggage, ect) even though i didn't need to,flying from KLAX 7R to KSFO 28L. like i said i'm not a pilot,..just learning the very basic stuff,I apperciate the feed back you gave me thanks.

Bond,

Just to tag on to what R1830 said, the "heavy" spoken following the flight number is only said in the terminal environment.

In other words, you only use the term from clearance through ground control, tower, and departure. Once enroute and talking to the "center" controllers, the use of "heavy" is dropped.

PS: Must be a nice sim you're flying! Which one?

fs2004 with about 3 gig of extras, the plane is by Level-D simulations 767-300er highly detailed cockpit, overhead, center, fmc, gps, autopilot, ground control, ect,,perhaps you can check it out on there web site, i highly recommend it.also running all of mega scenery add-ons of USA,flight1 ai traffic and alot more.YOU NEED A GOOD COMPUTER AND GRAPHIC CARD otherwise it will run slow it's about a close as you can get to the real thing.(for those of us that don't fly the real jets that is) the 767 by Level-d simulations has been tested with real 767 pilots.

Im using the following set-up...(for now )

AMD 64 3200+ processor
2 Gig's of memmory
ATI 9800 pro with 256 mem
fast ATA 160 Maxtor HD
ViewSonic VG800 18" LCD Screen
and Wingman Extreme joystick

and with all of that,,it still takes a little time to load-up.

I'm trying to find a real throttle assembly from a 2 engine plane to hook-up (modify) to my computer, a scrap one of course. I heard of the plane graveyard or scrapyard out in the desert,i will try to find them again.

Thanks to everyone who has helped me,i'm learning alot more thanks to all of you.

I had no idea this level of interest was out there for sim-flying commercial airliners. Way to go.

I play FS2004 also, it's a fun game. They do the best they can in capturing the control and feel of a real airplane, but it's nowhere near the real thing. On the other hand, the navigation is almost flawless. I always just do IFR's in heavy fog with the Mooney or the Baron to practice my instruments.
