Several years ago when I was flying 152's and 172's without built-in intercoms, I bought a David Clark DC-200 portable intercom. It worked well and has the interface you are looking for. The downside is the price.

If I were to my iPod (not that I would ever do that during flight), I would pop one of the earbud under earcup of my headset. It is free and works just fine for me... err ah.. I mean it would in theory work just fine.

Skywriter, I think the advantage of the built-in intercom vs. the headset adapter is that the intercoms built for that will mute the music input when then the radio is receiving a transmission - the straight inut probably won't. I made my own adapters a long time ago, and they worked great - as long as I was flying VFR incommunicado. Now, flyin around IFR and stuff.. I'd worry about missing a call if music was piping through over the radio traffic.

I'd be more worried about missing a face-melting guitar solo if ATC was being piped over my music.
