Default Boeing 787 No. 1

Maybe we can organize a tour at the Everett plant or a trip to the Museum of Flight when we have our Summer BBQ on July 4?

From Seattle Times:

Boeing's new 787 Dreamliner No. 1 is finally outside. The jet, due to have its first flight in June, is parked on the flight line beside the runway at Everett's Paine Field, where it is being fueled for the beginning of final ground tests.

The plane was towed to the flight line Sunday, near a new 777 awaiting delivery to KLM, and will stay outside until its first flight.

The first of the ground tests will involve running the engines and the auxiliary power unit, and testing all the flight systems under the plane's own power.

That's followed by what's called a "gauntlet test," in which the airplane systems are operated on the ground as if the jet were flying, and single and multiple failures are simulated.

Finally there will be taxi tests, beginning at low speeds and building up to a high-speed taxi test, at which time the jet will go fast enough to lift the nose wheels off the ground before the pilot brakes to a halt.

The Dreamliner's first flight could take place within a day of a successful high-speed taxi test.

I didn't know if you had this or not.

Boeing: Future of Flight Aviation Center & Boeing Tour

I seem to remember that Flight Crew get a discount of some sort as well (ID required).

That said, it would eat up a good part of your day traveling back and forth to Everett, presuming you have the BBQ in your backyard. MOF may be better as it's a hour closer (give or take).

I'd call ahead to make sure you can get do the tour. I went during the strike, unknowingly, and there were no plant tours. We got a drive around airfield so that we could see the planes, but the museum itself is more of a visitors center and tour waiting room. Still not bad as everyone got in for free so "they could stick-it to management."

This plane needs to get in the air as I read airlines are shifting to the A330 rather than continuing to wait.

I did a tour of the everett facility last summer. It was more than just the standard tour that most people get. We walked down the 777 assembly line. We didnt get to walk the 787 line thous we asked. but we did get to see one of them rigged up in static testing and another was on the floor for pressurization simulations. I got to touch this one. then we walkes the 747 line, though there were only a few 747's on the line B/C there getting ready to start up work on the 747-8. It was a great tour and it was much better than the normal tour.
