Default What is this flight instrument???

So I bought this little guy at a flea market to add to my small collection of flight instruments. I liked it because I have no clue what it is....heck it might not even go in an airplane. Its made by Kollsman and has no inputs on the back other than a couple leads (all self contained). If you pull the knob out you can rotate the hands. There's a "second", "minute", and "hour" hand, but why the unusual markings if it is just a clock. And what does the L.H.A.y stand for? If anybody has any ideas, I'd love to hear them. Thanks- Joe

After some quick research, it appears to be an LHA Aries calculator/instrument - used for celestial navigation. LHA is Local Hour Angle.

Agreed. Keep it safe...I bet there's tons of night freight dogs out there who would kill to have a working navigational instrument installed in their cockpit

I am more fascinated by the manufacturer: Square D. It's amazing what companies used to make aicraft components. Now they just make circuit breakers, panels and the like.

Cool find.

And Kollsman is the namesake of the Kollsman window in your standard altimeter. For those that may have forgotten, such as myself, he invented the barometric altimeter.
