Will enrolled friends have the same boarding priority as employees?

Can't believe anybody's happy with this POS system. Why are we being offered just an industry average pass program? Aren't we supposed to be the biggest and the best airline out there? Looks like Stockholm Syndrome is alive and well at the new UAL.

What a bunch of crap. Having to pay outrageously high ZED fares for an empty first class seat is an absolute slap in the face.

Bet our slightly smaller cousin Delta doesn't pay to be upgraded up front. Also what about having to continue to pay a ZED fare to ride on our sister carrier until 2012?

I read the Employee Bulletin and I just shook my head (emphasis mine):

“We know that travel privileges are an important part of working for an airline, and our goal was to combine the two programs into a world-class program for our co-workers and retirees to travel with their families and friends on the world’s leading network,” said Human Resources Executive VP Mike Bonds. “In many instances, we were able to select the best features of each of the subsidiaries’ current programs. In other cases, where the provisions of the two programs were incompatible, we had to make choices and compromises.”

“We also evaluated the travel features that our competitors offer to their employees and retirees to make sure that United’s new program is industry-competitive and provides our co-workers and retirees with meaningful space-available travel options,” Mike added. “We are confident that our new pass travel program is an attractive, competitive program.”
Why is it, when it comes to employees, companies (or maybe just CAL/UAL) think industry standard, industry average, industry competitive, industry blah is all they need to do? To me, "world-class" and "industry-competitive" are two different things. So, which one is this program? I'd say the latter more than the former.

Look at Google, Facebook or any company that wants to attract and retain the best and brightest. They try to one-up the competition when trying to recruit and retain employees so they will come and stay as opposed to going to a competitor. Yes, we may not be hiring now, but in the future some positive word of mouth from your current employees would go along way to attracting good people to join the company.

I absolutely don't think UAL/CAL wants the best and the brightest. Those folks are reserved for pushing the boundaries of excellence, creating new products and ideas, and innovation with no ceiling.

UAL/CAL looks only at the floor, a bottom line--how long can they work a pilot, how little rest can they give a pilot, how many perks/pay they can remove from a pilot's QOL and still have an ontime, safe operation. They will explore this boundary to the limit, especially through outsourcing.

The pilots and the contract they negotiate are the only ones that stand between them and finding this limit. It's not for money we need to get a good contract, it's for the safety of the flying public. Proper compensation, QOL, and scope is simply a byproduct.

I'll be the first to say, "You CAN'T please everyone ALL the time".....but this loosely laid out 'new' travel policy is honestly pathetic on just about all levels that you pointed out.

IF this 'new policy' is ANY indication/foreshadowing of how Mgt hopes to embark on the final works within our JCBA, I can only think of one phrase that they need to get used to....."NO".

Don't you just love how the 6-month wait for new employees survived from the CAL side. I won't doubt for a second that new employees will also have to wait the old CAL 6 months to get health insurance, 401k, etc.

I rarely post but....if the No Healthcare BS for new hire pilots survives from the CAL side--ALPA really is Phuck3d. If you want to hire a professional to fly your jetliners---Treat Them as Such.

Upgrades are free, but the $50 annual service charge sucks.

Why are there any charges at all for passes? It costs them next to nothing for you to occupy an empty seat. It's not like they are somehow leaving that seat behind.

After all they have taken from the industry over the years you'd think they'd allow us one perk that doesn't come with a whole bunch of stipulations and attempts to nickel and dime pay checks.
