Go figure... Just when I started to think I had a handle on this industry after 15 years, someone changes the illusion/reality and I have to start all over again.
Don't compare yourself to these FOs. The FOs hired have immediate family members in the upper ranks of the airline or did a great job as interns (internship is essentially an interview too.) Some will deny it when you first ask, but when you dig enough you will find their link (parent, uncle, etc.) But proportionately there are very few FOs vs Captains hired.

The majority of the civilian pilots hired right now have been Captains at regionals, have 8+ years in the airlines, have been checkairmen/ IOE instructors, and have a clean record. Compare yourself to these.

The only reason United doesn't have PIC requirements to apply is to allow for those few FO exceptions. Otherwise, the industry is still highly competitive and United is skimming off the top of the applicant pool. Sounds like you are a good candidate so keep your application always updated.

Between being initially selected, and passing the online personality exam (never bring sex, politics or religion into the cockpit), United already choose to hire you. You have to either screw up the sim eval or the HR interview to make them change their mind.

When I did my M&G, I was told that they wanted to keep the pool stocked at ~100. But that was in Feb, when it basically stopped and they had about 180-ish swimmers.

This seems to be true, almost all the time. Back when L-CAL was hiring fast and furious (circa 2005-2008) there was a guy on this board giving class by class breakdowns of the all the new hires that he could. Most had PIC/AC time, with no TPIC being in the minority. Meaning sure, one can get hired with NO TPIC, happens frequently. But their resume/background compensated in other areas. PRIMARILY networking and contacts, interning, what have you.

Again, going from my M&G, the "average" (gottta read between the lines on that one) civ/regional new hire has 9000+ TT and 4000+ TPIC. I say AGAIN, "average". The "dark decade" and the stagnation it's created had definitely slid/skewed the numbers of the pilots that make of the civ/regional demographic as far as experience levels go.

True, and although this a UAL thread, that's actually the case at the other legacies as well without a PIC requirement. AA, DAL, and USAir have hired pilots without the PIC as well.

All of the FO's at my regional (SkyWest) didn't seem to have anything other than job fairs or meet a chief pilot once or twice. Many of our recently (within the last year or year and a half) upgrades have been taken by UAL as well. Most of these guys that I know have less than 1,000 jet PIC and only attended a job fair or two.

Me...not a Checkairman, app has been in for years but it seems that it's (as of lately) cheaper to make recently upgraded captains Checkairman rather than someone with 10+ years and 7K PIC in the RJ.

I have a completely clean flying record, never a problem child at the airline, and (so I'm told) I'm fun to fly with and make the job fun. I once thought networking and building a good resume of experience was what it takes to get an interview invite, but watching, hearing, and learning about the pilots that UAL is taking from SkyWest makes me wonder if all that work means nothing.

Sorry, it's just kinda dejecting to have gone through 9/11, then age 65, all the while keeping the end goal in mind, only to get this far and watch coworkers that didn't know anyone and have zero turbine PIC get called and offered the job.

I should clarify, I'm not bad mouthing anyone. Every regional FO that I personally know and flew with that is at UAL would have been great captains at OO. I'm simply frustrated with the system and the logic.

Maybe life is trying to humble you.....because life doesn't owe you squat.

Only worry about stuff YOU can control and your life will get a lot less stressful.

The system and the logic can be frustrating, but when you put yourself in the shoes of the HR managers and directors tasked with wading through 12,000 applications that are constantly being updated and changed (new jobs, gaining check airman, upgrading) to hire a few hundred per year you have to wonder, how would YOU do it?

BYOB...in this market, everyone knows a guy...some know several. The question is do you know the right guy? I was equally as frustrated as you...I am on the pool side of the fence now, but I know hope you feel. I don't know anybody that has been hired without either knowing somebody or being able to check some kind of "government program" box. That being said, I bet half of the 12,000 applicants have 6000 plus of everything. Like the guy before said, focus on what you can control. Frequency of app updates, job fairs, chatting up jumpseaters, logbook currency...take a deep breath, because things can always get worse. It's not a perfect world, but we all live in it. Good luck to all.

Recent News/Scuttlebutt
01 May- Hiring Update- Due to some additional training opportunities over the summer, United plans to train most, if not all new-hire pilots in a pool awaiting class dates between now and the end of August 2014. To ensure that we have a sufficient number of new pilots in the pipeline to fill class dates in September, we will screen a limited number of pilot applicants for a couple of weeks in June. Our needs beyond September will be met through screening that is not likely to begin again until mid-August.
21 April – CV’s replacement is “BK”.
