For the record, I think it sucks that I have to do three hours worth of training that insults my intelligence for one hour of pay. Regardless, I will follow the contract and do my best to be professional.
Very well said!

As I sit through this rubbish (at min volume while watching NBA Playoffs), I find myself agreeing with the emotions of the OP. I enjoy sports and a cold beverage esp when paid for it. That said, darn that fear that my employer is not worth planning any long term future on!

I would like to hope that our VP rolled his eyes when Jeff's bean counters came down hard on him with the need for a three hour module covering subjects Business 101-How Airlines Save Fuel 301. Then again our boy Howie wouldn't be where he is if he weren't a worthless Yes Man. One billion in savings requires paying one hour pay to 11000+ who are well aware of every slide show subject covered? Nice. Call me when the ramp in EWR or ORD actually hooks up air that keeps the cabin temp appropriate Jeffery....

Default Fuel Schmuel

You are missing the real issue here....be it fuel, APU, dry cleaning all your clothes and expensing it at training, living with the scandalous crap they call a crew meal....

It is all about the two way street and treating us like we are the problem when we apply the UPA and fighting over every cent while at the same time "training" us to save them money...money we will probably never see. The disconnect is vividly displayed daily yet here we are, case in point, arguing over HOW we can save these idiots more money. Quoting the FOM to see if we CAN save more fuel.

Profit sharing I suppose is the argument. Ask UAL guys how that worked a few of years ago when the CAL MEC Chair made a side deal with the devil and therefore the rightful UAL side $$ was reduced in order to reward the CAL side for an illegal agreement outside the T&PA. Mgmt was found to have violated the T&PA yet was not required to pay because the UAL side didn't think it wise to take back from CAL to give to UAL. The comp proposed only THAT arrangement knowing it was not palatable. DIVIDE AND CONQUER in the war waged against your own "co-workers." So who's the real adult here and who is the child. I'll make it easy....mgmt will take from you anything they can get and they have a team of lawyers to spin it any way they can. We have a group of pilots just trying to do the right thing and abide by the UPA, mgmt doesn't have the same goal as evidenced by the tons of grievances now awaiting adjudication. Sooooooo this same mgmt team sees nothing wrong with treating us like imbeciles, insulting our intelligence as they to try and squeeze out a extra dime.....fat chance. Major DISCONNECT.

I frequently ask myself, who are we competing against as an airline. The majors, of course but domestically, SW. Not how is it SW makes a profit every quarter. Must be the fleet of RJs they use, right? Maybe, just Maybe it's the fact that they include and value their workforce and not just with mere words (co-worker) but deeds. What if you had a spouse that swore he/she loved you but was out every night hooking up? Who is the idiot? Fool me once, Fool me twice! Loyalty will ALWAYS be a two way street. It is long overdue that we demand mgmt understand that too.

Final note....if the BOD is all over JS about this then isn't it a great way to get rid of JS?

Actually..... I think there is an active bulletin that says if you don't have the final weights prior to taxi, complete the after start checklist with the planned weights and begin to taxi. Once the final weights are received and entered, brief the changes. This is then part of the "Departure Changes Brief" - Complete item on the Before Takeoff Checklist.

Small point, but it seems to have been missed during the avalanche of changes we incurred.

While I agree with the OP about the ridiculousness of our management's wasteful and horrendous performance, I also think if we are honest with ourselves we are the bottom of the barrel in fuel performance. It's all well and good to pound the chest and say this place sucks. But when every other major is going to earn a profit and sees their trend line up and we are going to post a loss and see our trend line down, I think it behooves us to try to perform. I don't particularly want to start over. We have a contract. We can create some leverage for the next one by performing now so that we actually have a metric which can show our displeasure.

Call me a Marvin all you want, but I don't enjoy flying with FO's who are going to be furloughed..... again. If it comes to that because our management sucks then I can handle that. But it's going to be hard to look in the mirror while I'm burning extra dinosaurs at $113/barrel and watching them get shown the door because we are losing money and shrinking. I defend the contract to the letter, but I DO think it's time we do our part to save $$ an fuel. It's one less thing that management can blame us for their failures about.

14-028. Dated February 12th.

Excellent post bumped. Additionally as an Airbus pilot I figure that not operating the jet efficiently just gives the company an excuse to park them that much sooner, 737-300 style.

Default Let the Lemming Parade Begin!

Blame us?

Oh God Oh God OH GOD when will anyone take responsibility? Management will blame US for their failings? Why oh Why do we allow this team of boobs to even consider blaming us? Because we let them!!!

UALs recall the December when we cancelled 1/2 our schedule and these idiots said it was because of unprecedented weather....never before seen in ORD...even back to the caveman days I suppose...when it was really because they cut ramp staff to the bone with no room to adapt to the winter in ORD. It NEVER snows in ORD, dontchaknow? Shares was a smashing success, huh? Vacation bidding was flawless, yeah? Just keep repeating the lies and they will eventually stick. Well Wall Street is finally looking at the numbers and JS is a joke.

We just bend over and take it day after insulting day and never say BOO. Recall SERE school when they were beating us in interrogation and then had us grab our balls as they screamed at us, "What are you?" When we finally woke up and yelled in their face..."I AM AN AMERICAN FIGHTING MAN" they stood back, smiled and said, "Now you get it!"

I really fear we will NEVER get it. You, You jump off the cliff, you and you follow...and so on. Lemmings.

The cart is before the horse...morale leads to constructive fuel savings then world can sing Kumbayah in unison. Putting the cart first and treating us like the mule, adding more load while slapping us with whips....may work for some, but I truly home we can stop drinking the Kool Aid. The beatings WILL actually stop when morale improves. Trust us. (selling 767-200 in IAH, RJs in IAH, Profit Sharing for UAL)

JS has gotta go! Bad Mgmt has gotta go. It has to so good Mgmt has a chance to return us to what was once a great airline...Neiman Marcus is being run like Kmart. (Think Bethune said that).
