Well, in a simplified way, yes. However, there are a few operators out there that are not well liked amongst pilots in the airline world. Especially those that work under collective bargaining agreements. There never was a strike, nor a picket line to cross at said operators. And people that go to work there can get very little respect from their peers if they did choose to work there. One of them just changed their call sign.
Sadly, contrary to popular belief, it will have very little impact on their careers as a whole. Or, whether they make it to a major, legacy, or wherever they want to end up. Although many of us wish and pray the opposite was true. If by some chance the guy on the opposite side of the interview table ACTUALLY has a clue as to these specific operators, it may be a different story.

So my understanding of a scab is pretty much the guy who decides to work, keep working, start working, while the others are out striking??
I'm sorry but, what if the guy has mouths to feed and a hefty mortgage on his shoulders, and couldn't afford to go on strike w/o pay? How bout the guy who is living paycheck to paycheck??
What about all the other employees of the company that get laid off because the pilots wont fly? (dont they?) especially just to better my life?
just asking... but why is it such a BIG DEAL?? people are just trying to live their life.... and it kinda seems childish to draw a line between people especially other pilots.
We are discussing the union vs. non-union in my class lately... and it just seems like you love it or hate it.

You'll have a better clue(I hope) when you start flying in the industry. That being said, let's say 5000 pilots go on strike and 500 decide to cross the line and work...do you not think the other 4500 pilots have bills to pay or mouths to feed? Your answer is exactly what Scabs say to justify their traitorous actions. Pilot's don't strike for the hell of it and it's hardly allowed by the gov't anymore, but it's sometimes necessary for the greater good of the entire group.
I didn't know it was this serious. I remember both my dad and grand dad some times refusing guys a jump seat on their aircraft.
Hey there J.. straight and simple.. Scabs in aviation are people who cross the picket line when their airline is on strike, or take a job at an airline where there is a strike. It's nothing else. There are some who think the MD-11 that your dad and myself flew for the wages we did it for makes us scabs.. and in some ways I can understand their frustration when the airplane clearly should pay more than it did at Gemini, but the fact remains, a scab is not what ever people want to say he is.. it's what I said above.
Anyway, give your dad my best, and have him call me, I've got some interesting news to pass on!

Not only is it a BIG DEAL, its the BIGGEST DEAL. Scabs "just trying to live their lives" are doing so on the backs of those guys on strike, who are sacrificing short-term for long-term gains that the scab and his family will benefit from. This isn't just a pilot thing, and I wouldn't go around calling it childish. Its the same way in every profession that's unionized...if you're uncomfortable with it, chose a profession that isn't unionized and don't even think about undercutting our careers.
