Attire required for Jumpseat in the back
I know it's not allowed on the jumpseat but if I am given a seat in the back, are jeans and a polo acceptable attire for a jumpseater from another airline? Jeans are ok at the airline I work for for everyone. Just wanted to know the rules

Jumpseat dress code is uniform, business, or business casual. I like golf style trousers to throw in your bag. They are packable, breathe well, and don't wrinkle. If you pass ride in the back jeans are fine even in first as long as they are dressy. Pass riding is not the same as jumpseating.

The airlines I worked for had a "no jeans" policy for the jumpseat and if I recall even for non-reving in the back. Perhaps some policies have relaxed over the years.
Having said that, if you apply for the J/S then you must meet the dress code requirement for the J/S. The fact that the Captain offers you a seat in the back is irrelevant in my opinion.
It is best to always be in casual business attire as a minimum.

Polo is fine. You will meet with resistance in many cases if you wear jeans to Jumpseat whether you end up in the cabin or in the actual Jump. I've seen gate agents "police" the dress code before you even get a chance to make it to see the Captain. Better to be safe so I would skip the jeans. Sorry.....

So what is it with we pilots? Why is it so important to go against the grain and wear jeans or some other non-approved clothing?

I think it has more to do with the sterling quality of layover clothes in ones suit case....uniform pants, or the rumpled jeans...fashionistas we are not.
