Very observant. I will let you in on a little secret. They are special issue and woven from the hair of metrosexuals collected from the finest salons in New York. The hair is chosen for it's compliance to any authority figure and is easily bent to any desired belief.
We wear them when the ship is in silent running mode to evade Russian submarines. The odd scuff of a crewmember's shoe against the deck could give away our position.
