Retirement of N646DL in service with DAL since 1989. Proud lady who excelled on her final flight - time to climb to FL400 was 8 minutes at .81M.

On final to VCV

It's sad to see them go. Such a beautiful machine how many story can it tell.

Why are they retiring such a young lady when they are still flying the diesel 9? Its like retiring the 25 year old intern when grandpa is still punching the timeclock at 7 every am?

Probably a leased aircraft that DAL didn't want to renew the lease on. Its an easy way to shed capacity by returning aircraft. Not to mention those Diesel 9's are paid for. But I agree with ya, I'd rather see the diesel 9s going out, they've had a good long life.

They have to keep the 9's in service to get the ferry flight crews back to ATL.

Great question. The 757 is the nicest plane I have ever flown. Nothing else does what it does. Take off from short field airports and fly 2500 miles. Or take off from a regular field and fly 4000 miles. All the while carrying 191 people with thousands of pounds of cargo and climbing directly to FL370 or higher where it sips gas at 3100/pph per engine. It has many years left IMO. The problem is the economy. As they come up on heavy checks they are being retired but to be honest I'm flying full planes all the time so its not a capacity issue.
