Definitely echo the Wildlife Conservation Center in Portage; I'm in there on a regular basis with my current (non-flying) gig.

If you're driving south at all the Exit Glacier trail in Seward is a good one. Also the Sealife Center and if you like dogs the Iditaride, both in Seward.

Also check out kayaking at Eklutna lake north of town. There's an outfit that can set you up to kayak to one end of the lake then bike back along a fairly level trail. Easy for kids.

Decent family hiking from the Glen Alps trail head on Powerline Pass, or for something a little more adventurous go up Flattop from the same trail head.

A flightseeing trip up to Knik Glacier is a quick and easy trip, and really inexpensive if you know anyone with access to an aircraft. I'm thinking hard about getting a checkout soon myself.....

If you can spare a day from your family and want a real Alaskan aviation experience you can jumpseat for a day on a DC-6. Be dressed ready to work because they'll make you help unload.

You planning on staying in ANC or drive around a bit?
