At the time that Spike ejected, no other coallition crewmember who had ejected over Iraq had been rescued, they had ALL been captured. Spike was the first pilot to eject over Iraq and make it back home. The only injury he had was a long nasty scratch across his neck. He was back in the cockpit in a few days and flew the rest of the war.

They weren't actually flying a night mission. It was a late day mission and the sun was just setting as they were egressing. The actual rescue happened after sunset.

To my knowledge, we never figured out what happened to his jet. At the time we thought it was just a malfunction, not battle damage.
