Not necessary..many folks have been hired without them. They do improve the odds, though. Understand... the process as now driven by HR is a mathematical exercise. A letter counts for X amount of points. Will it make the difference between being hired or not? Hard to say. It depends on what the score is for all the other things along the way.
That being said, how do you get Letters of Rec into the system? Do you have to make it past the phone interview/Tech test first? Attach them with your resume?
