Maybe he meant as automated? Honestly, if you "set it and forget it" you might end up dead if you don't know what you're doing. Leaving the "FLCH" mode on then disconnecting the AP while on short approach while not coupled with the ILS and not monitoring the AT you could end up stalling really close to the ground. There are several "gotcha" scenarios that could get you into big trouble.
It's not as simple as making sure a switch is in auto mode. However, this airplane is very easy if you know how to use the switches.
