My flight department is finally getting around to adopting a formal SMS program, beginning from the ground up. They plan to hire from within, with the intention that the pilot that is hired as the Saftey Manager work on the program while on duty, and if need be, coming in on days off to conduct business/training/meetings. (I'm interested enough to have applied because we need it, and I would like to better our department.) Mgmt is giving a small percentage raise (2-3%) for compensation.

Those of you that are the IS-BAO/SMS manager for your flight department, how are you compensated for your time and duties while performing these functions? How much time (realistically) does it take to achieve FAA Level 1 Certification?
