They will, however certainly expect you to pay for a broken ipad. $600 is the better part of a months take home pay for a first year F/O, and an off brand plastic case can be bought on Amazon for about $20. That is pretty cheap insurance to prevent a very nasty sting.
That won't do a thing to stop the company from charging a first year FO $600 if they decide to.
