From talking to one of the base chief pilots, it sounds like you show up to PDX on the first day of indoc, they hand you the check,
then they hand you the company ID.
As I understand it, management can't attach conditions to the money (since that would be an even more blatant violation of the CBA), so they're basically relying on the implied threat of badmouthing anyone that does take the money and run to future airlines.
