and how exactly do you enforce a merit based system. seniority creates some sort of fairness without bias. merit based will always be biased because theres too much subjective criteria that goes into it.

ok go negotiate your own wages. and if you ding an airplane, go fight your airline and the FAA on your own. and if you have a health problem, good luck getting back your medical on your own. and who needs to get laid, you can do that "on your own" as well.
