That's why I was asking for a reference. My DPE said it came up in their meeting, and they were told if the 3 hours were with a -II, it could be used towards 61.51(d)(2).
Legally the way the regs are written it would be real hard for the FAA to deny the hours if a CFII did the training.
I think the intent of the training is different, but they didn't really spell that out in writing.
