Does having your application in longer help you? sure because they can see it earlier, but delaying to put your application in by no means hurts your chances of being hired.
You actually don't know that either though.
While it is very much possible to have your app in for a short time and get hired, you can't say for certainty (well you did, but not accurately) that it doesn't hurt your chances. The only things we can say with certainty would be that it doesn't help to delay submitting your app and it doesn't hurt to submit it earlier. It possible that time isn't a factor, but we don't know that.
You actually admitted as much in your last paragraph. If doing one things helps your chances, not doing it hurts them. It's just a matter of degree.
