Many hired in 2005-2006 were furloughed legacy pilots who were troughing in the Guard and USAFR. Hiring prospects were much, much tougher then compared to now. There were real situations where pilots had to choose between part time work or becoming a mgt captain. I wouldn’t have done what they did, but I understand they did what they had to do to provide for themselves and families. Also, some interviewed at UPS for line jobs but were only offered mgt. in today’s climate there isn’t any reason to take it as opportunities abound.
