One thing to consider is that commuting from FL to IAH will be tough. There are a bunch of really senior United pilots making the same commute and you could very easily get bumped off of numerous flights. Also, unless you don’t have a degree, the heavy freight world isn’t that great. That big airplane loses its appeal pretty quickly when you’ve been on the road for two weeks and you’re heading to the sandbox in the middle of the night on a military charter. Freight is great if you can get on with FedEx or UPS, but if Atlas or Kalitta is your goal, those long trips are tough on family life and the kids. If you don’t have a degree, and have no plans to get one, I’d say that something like Kalitta would be better than spending eternity in regional purgatory. Either way, since you’re just starting out, fly hard, keep a clean record, and build a resume. You have some time to figure out where to go next.
