I've used my company provided short term disability several times over the years when changing medications and finally had to change to a medication I can't fly with. I'll soon transition from company provided LTD to the Harvey Watt plan my union sponsored.

Monthly premiums were over $300 but it's well worth it because now I'll have an income more or less equal to what a SIC at my company would make. And I'll have it until a few years past my normal SS retirement age. Had I been younger when I quit flying I'd have it until normal SS retirement age. Well worth the $$$$, and the money is tax free unless you deducted the premiums from your taxes. Without this Loss of Medical plan I'd be greeter at WalMart or else having to start burning my 401k years sooner.
