IIRC the government will defend them unless it was determined that the actions in question were outside the line of duty. Even if mistaken, as long as they acted in good faith they should be fine. The government may even be able to stop the lawsuit... suing a federal employee acting in his official capacity is the same as suing the federal government.

Might be a deposition fishing expedition... hoping somebody was texting while controlling or the like.

That's pretty common for all employers, at least in practice if not policy. If a big employer leaves employees hanging out to dry, they will like make a deal to testify on behalf of the plaintiff against the deep pockets.
