I bet they get really cheap. Maybe not the rapid tests, but as long as you get tested routinely within a rolling periodicity it would probably be good enough if the results took a couple days... that would probably get overall statistical safety where it needs to be.
It wouldn't be forever, just until the thing fades away with most of the world vaccinated.
