Just to make sure it's not lost in the messaging: I'm not discouraging higher education with my kids by any stretch. On the contrary, I'm enthusiastically encouraging them to pursue higher learning, but to do so under their own steam, and that starts with taking responsibility for the endeavor from the start. The final goal that I am encouraging them to reach is to finish their formal education DEBT FREE.

Think about two graduates going out into the workforce. Same degree, same skills. One is unencumbered, while the other is saddled with $100k in loans. Which do you think is at the advantage?

My kids are privileged. I make sure of it.
