Just to be clear, the planes DO have an intercom, but you have to push the button to use it. Thats hard for a CPT do to on the ground when both hands are occupied. In the air? If / when you want to talk, I probably wont hear you unless you yell or use the intercom. Headset goes over both hears as soon as I let go of the tiller.. If I don't do that, I will never hear you.. Much worse !
On the MD11 if you push the mic button forward on the yoke you will be on service intercom. Its what we talk to the tug drivers with. You can use it in flight if you have the int volume up. You don't have to select Int on the comm panel, you can stay on VHF.
