Ahead of tomorrow’s second-quarter financial results, Doug and Robert recently gave analysts and our team a forecast of what we can expect. And the news is promising. As an airline, our revenue and expense performance for the quarter came in better than expected. As an industry, travel demand is returning. Though the numbers aren’t at 2019 levels and the demand itself looks different right now, it’s the path to recovery we’ve all been focused on.

Beyond our more immediate recovery efforts, our attention is also on our long-term future, building American to thrive forever and our pilots are key to that. I’m glad to share that our previous hiring expectations are increasing — we intend to hire 350 new pilots by the end of year and now anticipate hiring more than 1,000 pilots in 2022.

New hire classes will resume in September and will include flow from Envoy, Piedmont and PSA, as well as pilots who were hired at the onset of the pandemic, but were idled as we paused our recruiting and hiring efforts. Though we were limited in pilot growth this past year, we are now moving full speed ahead with plans to continue recruiting, hiring and training the best and most diverse pilots in the business. The online application for new hire pilots opens this Friday, July 23 and can be accessed at aa.pilotcredentials.com.

As the pace of hiring ramps up, our ask of you is to look for opportunities to mentor these pilots who will be joining our ranks very soon. Nobody knows better what it takes to be an American Airlines pilot than the best aviators in the world. Thanks for your continued leadership this past year and for everything you do every day to deliver and care for our customers and colleagues.
