I knew of these two viper guys who bought a 172 (or 152?) for fun...they promptly cracked it up on landing. Insurance bought them another one, which they also wrecked in short order. After that they hung it up.
That's why all us jet drivers should only fly light GA with a flying club, thus you have an annual Insurance Checkout regardless. As to the original topic, the regs are pretty clear that a Form 8 Instrument ride is all you need to satisfy the BFR.
