I flew an airplane in 2006 that would have legally flown with the autopilot and both FDs on MEL had the captain not called the CP and demanded to have the one that worked (conveniently enough, the FO FD).
Seriously? A 121 Captain didn't feel comfortable dispatching a plane without an A/P or FD's?! What does that say about us...
